Worried about Greenhouse effect? Did you know ~20% of N America CO2 emissions
come from auto's. (approx. 45% from industry)... Likewise, worried
about dependence on foriegn oil? I believe we, the consumer, drive
both industry and government! Sure we can complain to the gov't to set this
standard or that policy... but here is history: the 1970's CAFE standards raised
fuel efficiency in American cars by 7.6 miles a gallon (approx. 30%) in just
six years... but you know... our actual mileage per gallon now is lower,
even with more efficient cars: "average fuel mileage of all 2001
model year vehicles to 20.4 miles per gallon, the lowest in two decades
." (http://latelinenews.com/ll/english/1105916.shtml)
So even with cafe standards and improved cars we're eating up the gas (and
spewing the pollutants)
The Kyoto treaty calls for 7% reduction. Here is a real quick way to make
this happen! Let us consumers change our automobile consciousness.
Slow down on driving the SUV's and buy a new hybrid gas/electric car- Toyota Prius or Honda Insight with
one tenth the emissions or even the more standard ULEV auto's which provide
70% drop from '98 standards. We consumers could shift that 7% Kyoto equivelant
within a few years- quicker than Kyoto's 2008/2012!
I love our Prius! Warmer weather I'm getting 51-54mgp, colder weather 49-51mpg! And the Suburban sits in the garage waiting
for the occassional task of hauling cargo/boat, etc.
